Synonyms, Antonyms and Homonyms
To understand the differences, consider the following questions:
1. What does the word mean?
2. How is the word spelled?
3. How is the word pronounced?

With these questions in mind, let us look at synonyms, antonyms and homonyms.
Synonyms
1. Words are synonyms when the meaning of the words is the same or similar
2. The spelling of words that are synonyms is different
3. The pronunciation of words that are synonyms is different
Antonyms
1. Words are antonyms when the meaning of the words is opposite or almost opposite
2. The spelling of words that are antonyms is different
3. The pronunciation of words that are antonyms is different
Homonyms
1. Have different meanings.
2. Can be spelled the same or differently
3. Sound the same or similar
We can divide homonyms into two different types, homographs and homophones
Homographs (homo = same, graph = writing) – tear (rip) – tear (in your eye), record (noun) – record (verb)

2. Spelling is the same
3. Pronounced differently
Homophones (homo = same, phone = sound) – pear (fruit) – pair (two), heard (with ears) – herd (group of animals)
